Overview

Mechanical engineers research, develop, design, manufacture, and test mechanical devices. The University of Akron offers an undergraduate program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, one of the broadest engineering degrees available, providing graduates with a wide range of career options. An accelerated option allows completion of both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in five years with significant cost savings. The comprehensive curriculum emphasizes the application of energy, momentum, and continuity principles to thermo-fluid and mechanical systems. Faculty members are innovative and interactive, integrate real engineering design challenges into coursework, and conduct year-round research in state-of-the-art facilities. Hands-on research opportunities are available through collaboration with faculty in numerous research centers and laboratories, including the NSF I/UCRC Center for Tire Research (CenTiRe), 3D Printing of Smart Structures Lab, Conquer Chiari Research Center, Acoustic and Elastic Composite Metamaterials Lab, Computational Aerodynamics Lab, Electrospun Polymer Adhesives Lab, Micro and Nano Engineering Lab, Microelectromechanical Systems Lab, Multi-scale Modeling of Damage and Failure of Materials Lab, High-Temperature Lab, Surface Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing Lab, Nonlinear Dynamics and Structural Mechanics Lab, Autonomous Systems Lab, Advanced Energy and Sensor Lab, Solid Mechanics Lab, and Human Factors Engineering Lab. Practical, real-world experience is supported through an optional cooperative education program, which allows participants to alternate semesters of academic study and professional work beginning after the sophomore year while earning competitive compensation. Additional experiential learning opportunities are available through participation in award-winning design competition teams such as Aero Design, Akronauts Rocketry, Formula Combustion, Formula Electric, Human Power Vehicle, and Baja. Engagement with peers and professionals is encouraged through student organizations and professional societies, including Tau Beta Pi, Women in Engineering, the National Society of Black Engineers, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. A degree in mechanical engineering prepares graduates for careers across a wide range of industries, including automotive, petroleum, energy generation and conversion, aerospace, tire, chemical, electronics, machinery, transportation equipment, electrical equipment, instruments, and fabricated metal products. Common areas of specialization include applied mechanics, computer-aided design and manufacturing, energy systems, control systems, pressure vessels and piping, heating, refrigeration and air conditioning systems, and materials engineering. Mechanical engineers continue to be in strong demand across manufacturing, engineering and management services, business services, and federal government sectors. Career Services supports career development by connecting students and alumni with employers for internships, cooperative education placements, and full-time professional opportunities.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
