Overview

Registered nursing is the largest health care occupation, with registered nurses often serving as the first health care professionals encountered by patients. The comprehensive nursing program is based on professional standards and includes education in nursing, the humanities, and the social, cultural, physical, and natural sciences, along with training in operational clinical decision-making. The faculty are innovative and interactive and incorporate multimedia technology to enhance classroom learning. Clinical experience begins in the first semester of the nursing program. Clinical partners include Akron Children’s Hospital, Cleveland Clinic–Akron General Medical Center, Akron General Edwin Shaw Rehabilitation, Brookdale Montrose, Haven of Rest, Head Start Center, Mercy Medical Center, Portage Path Community Mental Health Center, Rockynol Retirement Community, Summa Akron City Hospital, Summa Barberton Hospital, the Summit County Health District, and the Summit County Visiting Nurse Service. Students may participate in nursing-related student organizations such as InterVarsity Nurses Christian Fellowship, Men in Nursing, and the Student Nurse Association. An undergraduate degree in nursing provides a strong foundation for employment in a wide range of health care settings or for the pursuit of advanced degrees. Registered nurses are employed in hospital departments including surgery, maternity, emergency care, and pediatrics, as well as in physicians’ offices, clinics and emergency medical centers, nursing homes, home health care services, government and private agencies, schools, clinics, and community settings. Additional roles include teaching and promoting health care issues and working in occupational health at various work sites. Career opportunities for registered nurses continue to grow in response to the aging population in the United States. Career Services supports career development through coaching and programming and by building relationships with employers and campus partners to provide experiential learning opportunities and support successful transitions into professional careers.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Verify before applying

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
