Overview

Respiratory therapists evaluate and treat patients across the lifespan, ranging from premature infants with underdeveloped lungs to elderly individuals with chronic or acute lung disease. The comprehensive curriculum includes courses specifically designed for respiratory therapy professionals, covering cardiopulmonary anatomy and physiology, respiratory diseases, diagnostic procedures, treatment methods and rationales, the function and mechanics of respiratory equipment, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Within the field of respiratory therapy, two levels of professional credentials are recognized. The Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential requires successful completion of the CRT examination. After graduation from an accredited respiratory therapy program and successful completion of the CRT examination, candidates may attempt the Registry Examination to become a Registered Respiratory Therapist. Licensure is required by the state of Ohio to practice respiratory care. The faculty are innovative and interactive and bring extensive real-world experience to both classroom instruction and laboratory training. Hands-on, real-world experience is emphasized throughout the program. In departmental laboratories, students are trained to administer medical gases and aerosols and develop skills in gas analysis, airway management, humidification, postural drainage, pulmonary function testing, mechanical ventilation, and the use of respiratory care equipment. Clinical experience also includes time spent in hospital settings working directly with patients. Students may engage with peers and professionals through respiratory therapy student organizations, including the Organization of Respiratory Therapy (O2RT), the American Association for Respiratory Care, and the Ohio Society for Respiratory Care. A degree in respiratory therapy prepares graduates for careers in a variety of health care settings, including hospitals with responsibilities in respiratory care, anesthesiology, and pulmonary medicine, as well as clinics, physicians’ offices, nursing homes, and companies that provide home-use respiratory equipment.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
