Overview

Statistics is the discipline that focuses on the collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data. It is applied across a wide range of academic fields, including biology, chemistry, anthropology, geography, political science, and sociology. As a basis for logical and informed decision-making, statistics has broad application in both public and private sectors, including profit and nonprofit organizations. Because nearly every profession relies on verifiable, reliable, and informative statistical data—including mathematics, science, education, engineering, and related fields—graduates with degrees in statistics benefit from strong employment prospects. The University of Akron’s statistics program prepares graduates for advanced study as well as successful careers in private industry and in federal, state, or local government. The faculty are energetic and innovative and work closely with local industries to incorporate real-world statistical challenges into coursework, helping connect academic learning with practical applications. The Department of Statistics maintains two instructional computer laboratories and provides access to the latest statistical software, including SAS, SPSS, JMP, and Minitab. The Center for Statistical Consulting offers opportunities to gain valuable practical experience in the application of statistics through interaction with faculty members and clients. Demand for statisticians is high and continues to grow. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nonacademic employment opportunities for statisticians are expected to increase, and colleges and universities are projected to hire additional faculty in statistics-related fields. Salaries and opportunities for advancement are competitive and reflect current market demand. Graduates of the B.S., B.A., and M.S. programs are prepared for advanced study in statistics and related disciplines, as well as for the diverse application of statistical methods in business, industry, government, scientific research, and society.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Verify before applying

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
