Overview

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance is designed for students who wish to pursue professional training in dance, with an emphasis on ballet and modern dance techniques. The program provides extensive instruction in technical, performing, and choreographic skills and is supported by a strong foundation of coursework in dance history, pedagogy, and physical analysis. The BFA in Dance prepares graduates for careers in performance, graduate studies in performance and choreography, and related fields such as arts administration, dance history, physical therapy, dance therapy, dance education, dance ethnology, and teaching in private studios. Placement into the dance program for the first year of study as a probationary dance major is granted through audition only. Advancement through levels of dance technique is based on academic performance, requiring a grade of “B+” or higher for one semester to progress from Ballet IV through Ballet VIII, and a grade of “B” or higher for one semester in all other technique classes. Admission to the BFA degree program in Dance within the School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration requires completion of one year of study as a probationary dance major, demonstration of acceptable work habits, and successful completion of the Freshman Jury and Interview. Upon meeting these requirements, students gain admission to the college and hold status as a BA in Dance major while preparing to audition for the BFA program at the end of the sophomore year. BFA students are required to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.875 in all dance classes for a period of two years and may be placed on artistic probation if work habits are deemed unacceptable. Full status must be regained in order to graduate. Graduation with the BFA in Dance requires completion of one full year of Ballet VIII with a minimum grade of “B,” continuous enrollment in a ballet technique class each semester until all technique requirements are fulfilled, and maintenance of an overall GPA of 2.875 in all dance classes.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
