Overview

The Master of Arts in Counseling with a concentration in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) is the only COAMFTE-accredited program in Ohio. Marriage and Family Therapists diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders within individuals, couples, families, and groups from a relational and systemic perspective. They assist clients in developing skills and strategies to address challenges constructively. The mission of the COAMFTE-accredited MFT Master’s Program is to train multiculturally informed, clinically competent practitioners who operate from a relational/systemic perspective, critically engage with research, and provide community service within the context of interprofessional collaboration. The MFT Master’s Program is offered in a hybrid format requiring residency in Ohio. The curriculum comprises 16 didactic courses totaling 47 credits and 5 clinical courses totaling 13 credits, for a total of 60 credit hours. Three of the didactic courses are fully online, while the remaining didactic courses are delivered in a hybrid format, combining 30–70% in-person instruction with online content through the University of Akron’s learning management system, Brightspace. Online components include narrated lectures, readings, presentations, supplementary materials, and activities such as discussion boards, quizzes, and reflection papers. Course delivery methods are determined based on the content and best teaching practices. The clinical requirement includes 300 direct client contact hours and 200 alternative hours, totaling 500 hours. Clinical experience is completed at the School of Counseling’s on-site, state-of-the-art Clinic for Individual and Family Counseling and at partner agencies throughout Ohio. The program maintains strong, long-standing relationships with multiple community agencies in the Akron area and beyond, offering excellent internship opportunities, with the majority of students receiving employment offers from their internship sites following graduation.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
