Overview

The Master of Arts in English provides students with a strong practical and theoretical foundation in preparation for careers or further study in graduate and professional programs. The curriculum emphasizes advanced methods for the study of literatures written in English, the fundamentals of composition as a discipline, and practical writing skills through courses in professional and rhetorical writing. Courses place texts within broader cultural and multicultural debates, and assigned writings require students to articulate informed viewpoints on real-world issues while practicing various forms of professional and critical writing. Students learn to interpret texts in contexts ranging from academic debate to the contemporary classroom and diverse professional settings. A minimum of 30 credit hours is required for the degree. The program offers both face-to-face and online modalities, and it can be completed entirely without attending campus. Early registration is encouraged to ensure the availability of 600-level seminars, as courses with low enrollment may be canceled. Detailed course information is available through the English department or the program’s course bulletin. Core coursework for the MA in English consists of 18 credit hours at the 600 level, including ENGL 611: Argumentation and Research Writing, ENGL 673: Theories of Composition, ENGL 665: Literary Criticism or ENGL 690: Critical Approaches to Literature, one additional 600-level literature course, ENGL 689: Grant Writing or Professional Writing Theory and Practice, and ENGL 699: Master’s Thesis or Capstone (3 credit hours). In consultation with faculty, students complete either a Capstone Project or a Thesis. The Capstone Option involves a customized final project and a portfolio based on the revision and presentation of 3–6 course artifacts, including at least one academic paper. The Thesis Option requires a sustained, publishable scholarly treatment of 60–100 pages on a topic in Literature or Composition studies. Students complete 12 additional credit hours from English courses offered at the 500 or 600 level, as listed in the course bulletin.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
