Overview

The University of Akron School of Counseling houses graduate-only programs that prepare future mental health professionals to serve individuals directly while contributing to the improvement of community systems. As mental health concerns have increased nationwide and federal, state, and local funding for prevention and recovery efforts has expanded, the field has experienced significant growth. Job opportunities for licensed mental health professionals are projected to rise much faster than the average occupation over the next decade, with employment available in a variety of settings including hospitals, VA medical facilities, non-profit agencies, employee assistance programs, public and private schools, universities, and private practices. The School of Counseling offers three master’s programs, all accredited by leading national bodies and all providing pathways to mental health licensure. These programs share a common core focused on holistic biopsychosocial wellness while providing specialized knowledge and skills grounded in diversity-centered and social justice advocacy frameworks. Courses are offered in hybrid formats—fully online, in-person with web enhancement, and fully in-person—with late afternoon and evening classes to accommodate adult and working students. Part of the College of Health and Human Sciences, the graduate-only School of Counseling promotes inter-professional collaboration and a holistic approach to behavioral health care. The program is supported by accomplished faculty, high licensure examination and employment rates, and state-of-the-art technology, including the only Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OMHAS) certified in-house behavioral health clinic.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
