Overview

The Master of Science in Applied Mathematics is a STEM-designated, thesis-based graduate program designed to train students in the formulation, analysis, and solution of mathematical models across a wide range of application areas. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary research, collaborative problem-solving, and practical applications of mathematical theory. Upon admission, each student undergoes a review process to assess competency in core undergraduate mathematics and prior coursework in at least one junior-level or higher course in engineering or physics. Additional courses may be added to the student’s curriculum if necessary to address gaps in foundational knowledge. Graduate study in the Department of Mathematics prepares students for careers in industry, government agencies, academia, and for further graduate study. The University of Akron’s Department of Mathematics builds on the institution’s reputation for excellence in applied sciences and engineering, offering a modern and practical approach to mathematics that integrates theory with applied, interdisciplinary problem-solving.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Verify before applying

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
