Overview

The Master of Science in Chemical Engineering is a STEM-designated graduate program that enables students to deepen their fundamental knowledge of chemical engineering while developing professional skills and hands-on experience for industrial careers. The program offers both thesis and non-thesis options. The thesis option requires 24 semester hours of graduate coursework and 6 semester hours of thesis research, culminating in an oral defense. The non-thesis option requires 30 semester hours of coursework. Applicants without prior engineering degrees must complete a Bridge Program, which typically extends the duration of the degree by approximately six months compared with students entering with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. In general, completion of the M.S. in Chemical Engineering requires two years of study beyond the bachelor’s degree. The program is offered through the College of Engineering and Polymer Science, an institution with more than a century of academic excellence and a strong record of research and innovation. The college provides a foundation for success in engineering, engineering technology, computing, polymers, and applied mathematics, fostering an environment where students address complex real-world challenges. Located in Northeast Ohio, the program benefits from proximity to a diverse range of small and large industries as well as government laboratories, providing direct engagement with professionals who collaborate with the college to demonstrate practical applications of theoretical knowledge. In addition to industry connections, students have opportunities to participate in design teams and paid cooperative education programs, supported by personalized guidance from esteemed faculty and staff. This environment equips graduates with the technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and professional experience needed to succeed and assume leadership roles in the field of chemical engineering.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Verify before applying

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
