Overview

The Master of Science in Chemistry is a STEM-designated, thesis-based graduate program that prepares students to become independent researchers while providing advanced training in instrumentation and coursework designed to strengthen communication skills. The program is regionally, nationally, and internationally recognized. Given that much of Northeast Ohio’s industry is based on chemicals and chemical products, the Department of Chemistry is committed to applying its expertise to improve the lives of individuals across the campus, community, region, state, and nation. Established in 1885, the University of Akron Department of Chemistry has a long-standing tradition of excellence in research and teaching. Notably, at the turn of the twentieth century, when the uses of certain chemical by-products were still emerging, UA chemistry professor Charles M. Knight taught the world’s first college course in rubber chemistry. The department offers American Chemical Society–approved bachelor’s degrees with options in physical chemistry, polymer chemistry, and biochemistry. Graduate programs include both Master of Science and PhD degrees in organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, and biological chemistry. Faculty research is internationally recognized and supported by grants from organizations such as the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Verify before applying

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
