Overview

The Master of Science in Civil Engineering is a STEM-designated graduate program that provides advanced instruction in the skills and technologies necessary to develop a deeper understanding of civil engineering. Students may specialize in environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, water resources and hydraulic engineering, or transportation engineering. The program offers both thesis and non-thesis options. The thesis option requires 24 semester hours of graduate coursework and 6 semester hours of thesis research, culminating in an oral defense of the thesis, typically completed over two years beyond the bachelor’s degree. The non-thesis option provides flexibility for working professionals to complete the degree part-time and requires 30 semester hours of graduate coursework and 2 hours of an Engineering Report. Applicants to the Master of Science program must hold a bachelor’s degree from a program accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology at the time of graduation, or provide evidence of an equivalent academic background to the Dean of the College of Engineering and Polymer Science and the appropriate department chair.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Verify before applying

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
