Overview

The Master of Science in Geology with a concentration in Environmental Geology is a STEM-designated degree that allows for interdisciplinary study, with up to eight credit hours selected from engineering, biology, and/or geography, subject to approval by a geology advisor. Graduate assistantships are not available in all departments, and availability varies by academic unit. The field of geosciences encompasses the comprehensive study of planet Earth. Faculty members within the department pursue both traditional and contemporary research across areas such as environmental geology, surficial processes, deep Earth processes, and geographic information systems, while also directing and instructing approximately 150 undergraduate students. The department’s primary research focus includes hydrogeology, paleoclimate reconstruction, climate change, modern siliciclastic and carbonate sedimentology, geomorphology, and aqueous geochemistry. In addition, the department is recognized as a leader in Earth science education research. Modern instrumentation supports geologic and environmental research, including an environmental scanning electron microscope, an environmental magnetism laboratory, a rock mechanics laboratory, and a comprehensive suite of instruments for aqueous geochemistry. Financing graduate education is an important aspect of the academic experience, and multiple sources of financial assistance are available. Student loans are offered to degree-seeking graduate students, with additional information available through the Office of Student Financial Aid, located in Simmons Hall.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Verify before applying

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
