Overview

The Master of Science in Accountancy is an approved Federal STEM degree program consisting of 30 credit hours and is designed to prepare graduates for professional careers in accounting. The program accommodates individuals from diverse academic backgrounds by providing a comprehensive curriculum that develops strong accounting competencies. Graduates with undergraduate degrees in accounting are able to broaden their business expertise through advanced coursework in areas such as information systems and finance, while those with limited prior exposure to accounting gain the foundational knowledge and technical skills necessary to pursue careers in the field. The degree offers both a professional accountancy option and an accounting information systems option to support varied career pathways. The program has been recognized for its ability to prepare students with differing levels of prior accounting experience for professional success, including preparation for the Certified Public Accountant examination within an accelerated timeframe. Graduates have reported successful outcomes, including readiness for professional certification and career advancement shortly after completion of the degree. Employment prospects for graduates of the Master of Science in Accountancy remain strong. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 126,500 openings for accountants and auditors are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of these opportunities are expected to arise from the need to replace workers who transition to other occupations or exit the labor force, including through retirement.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
