Overview

The Master of Studies in Law is offered by The University of Akron School of Law and is designed for individuals whose professional responsibilities involve legal concepts or who regularly work with legal counsel, including a wide range of non-lawyer professionals. The program may be completed in one academic year of full-time study or over several years through a flexible part-time format, providing a versatile alternative to the traditional three-year Juris Doctor degree. Participants in the Master of Studies in Law program attend classes alongside Juris Doctor students at an American Bar Association–accredited law school that has been recognized as a Top 50, Top-Tier Law School by Above the Law. Completion of the degree requires the successful completion of 30 credit hours at The University of Akron School of Law. Graduate assistantships are not available in all departments, and availability varies by academic unit. Prospective students are encouraged to contact the relevant department directly for information regarding assistantship opportunities. Financing a graduate education is an important aspect of the academic experience, and multiple sources of financial assistance are available. Student loans may be obtained by degree-seeking graduate students to support the cost of attendance.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
