Overview

The mission of the Department of Statistics is to provide a high-quality education in statistics through which students acquire fundamental statistical skills and develop an understanding of statistics as a profession. Graduates of the program are prepared for advanced study in statistics and related disciplines, including data science and analytics, as well as for the application of statistical methods in business, industry, government, scientific research, and society. The Department of Statistics offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Statistics, Statistics with a concentration in Data Science, and Statistics with a concentration in Actuarial Science, in addition to a minor in Statistics. The Master of Science in Statistics at The University of Akron is the only master’s-level statistics program offered at a public institution in the region, and the Actuarial Science program is one of only two such programs in Ohio housed within a statistics department. The department maintains two instructional computer laboratories equipped with current statistical software, including SAS, SPSS, JMP, Minitab, and R. A limited number of graduate teaching assistantships are available to qualified domestic and international graduate students. Assistantship decisions are made independently of admission decisions and include a tuition waiver, excluding fees, along with a bi-weekly stipend. The initial round of assistantship screening begins in the third week of January and continues until positions are filled or until April 15. All fully admitted students who have indicated interest in an assistantship are considered, with initial offers typically extended in March. Applications submitted after April 15 are not eligible for assistantship consideration but may still be reviewed for fall or spring admission. Graduate teaching assistants are responsible for teaching general education statistics computer laboratory courses. English proficiency is required and must be demonstrated by a minimum score of 23 on the speaking portion of the Internet-based TOEFL or through completion and successful passage of an approved course of study in English.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Verify before applying

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
