Overview

The BEng (Hons) in Polymer and Mechanical Engineering at TUS Midlands is designed to meet the demand for graduates with strong mechanical engineering fundamentals and specialised knowledge in polymer engineering. Polymer engineering skills are highly sought after across industries such as medical devices, healthcare, automotive, aerospace, packaging, electronics, construction, textiles, energy, and chemicals. Ireland’s polymer and medical device sector is recognised as one of the fastest-growing globally, with over 250 companies producing diverse medical devices and diagnostic products, employing a highly skilled workforce, more than 45% of whom hold graduate or postgraduate qualifications. The programme combines theoretical learning with practical experience, with approximately 50% of study time devoted to laboratory work and the remainder to engineering theory and application. Students gain exposure to industrial practices through visits to partner companies, hands-on work with advanced polymer and mechanical engineering equipment, and participation in small team projects that develop problem-solving, teamwork, communication, and ethical awareness. The course emphasises environmental responsibility, encouraging students to consider the impact of processes, materials, and products on sustainability. A mandatory six-month paid work placement in the third year, carrying 25 academic credits, allows students to gain practical experience within Ireland or abroad, with placements readily available in the medical devices, pharmaceutical, and advanced manufacturing sectors at companies such as Boston Scientific, Medtronic, Harmac, Trend, and Bausch & Lomb. The final year project, often linked to industry and potentially building on placement experience, further develops research, analytical, and problem-solving skills, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for careers as polymer and mechanical engineers.
