Overview

The BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering at TUS Midlands prepares graduates to invent, design, develop, manufacture, and maintain a wide range of products, equipment, and machinery. Mechanical engineers apply knowledge of materials, mechanisms, power, energy, and manufacturing technology to create specifications, build and test prototypes, and bring designs to life. The course has been developed in consultation with industry to address regional and national needs, ensuring graduates possess the theoretical knowledge and practical expertise demanded by global employers in this dynamic field. The programme combines theoretical learning with hands-on practical experience, with approximately 50% of study time spent in state-of-the-art laboratories and the remaining 50% focused on engineering theory and its application. Students gain exposure to industrial practices through visits to partner companies, participation in small team projects to enhance teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills, and critical appraisal of mechanical engineering systems to identify improvements and implement solutions. A mandatory six-month work placement in the third year, either in Ireland or internationally, provides 25 academic credits and adheres to employer-agreed criteria, offering valuable insight into industrial practices and professional engineering roles. The course is informed by engagement with leading regional and national manufacturing and supply chain companies, as well as research-active organisations, all of which have highlighted the need for mechanical engineers with strong practical skills. Graduates are well-equipped to meet the demands of the workforce and contribute effectively to the evolving field of mechanical and manufacturing engineering.
