Overview

The BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering with Energy at TUS Midlands combines mechanical engineering principles with specialised knowledge in sustainable energy technology, preparing graduates to address contemporary energy challenges in industry while promoting environmental sustainability. The programme equips students with the skills and expertise to optimise energy usage in manufacturing processes, enhance the efficiency of industrial machinery, and contribute to the generation, distribution, and storage of energy. Graduates are well-positioned for careers in energy production, renewable energy, HVAC systems design, manufacturing, and other sectors, with opportunities for international employment and engagement in sustainable energy initiatives. The course integrates theoretical learning with practical experience, with approximately 50% of the programme delivered through hands-on laboratory work in state-of-the-art facilities and 50% through engineering theory and its applications. Students gain experience operating high-end technical engineering equipment, critically appraising mechanical systems, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing corrective solutions. The programme also emphasizes environmental responsibility, teamwork, communication, and ethical awareness within the engineering profession. Industry engagement is a key component of the programme, including site visits to industrial partners, a six-month paid work placement in the third year within energy and manufacturing industries in Ireland or internationally, and a fourth-year industry-focused project. These placements and projects provide practical insight into industrial best practices, carry academic credit, and in some cases, the fourth-year project builds upon work undertaken during the placement, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for professional engineering roles.
