Overview

The BA in Applied Social Studies in Social Care is a programme approved by CORU, the Health and Social Care Regulatory Body. The programme prepares graduates for professional practice in social care through a strong emphasis on partnership working, advocacy and the provision of care for individuals and groups who require support. Social care practice is focused on the planning and delivery of high-quality care and support services, while also protecting and advocating for those with identified needs. The role of the social care worker includes guiding, challenging and supporting individuals and groups in achieving their full potential. This CORU-approved programme offers a wide range of learning opportunities designed to develop the knowledge, skills and professional values required to support vulnerable children, young people and adults who may need assistance for a variety of reasons. The programme is committed to delivering best practice in teaching and learning to support the development of competent, confident and professional social care workers. Two supervised practice placements, totalling 800 hours, form a core component of the three-year programme and provide essential real-life experience in social care settings. Students are supported throughout the placement process and are allocated placements that meet CORU proficiency requirements and programme standards. Students enrolled on the BA in Applied Social Studies in Social Care are required to be fit to practice, in accordance with the Technological University of the Shannon Midlands Midwest Student Fitness to Practice Policy and the Department of Social Sciences, Social Care Addendum. A mandatory attendance policy applies to the programme, with attendance recorded for all classes and monitored during practice placements by host agencies. Progression to the next stage of the programme requires completion of any additional placement hours necessary to compensate for absences, and all absences must be supported by appropriate verifying documentation.
