Overview

The Master of Science in Biopharmaceutical Technology builds on the long-established expertise and strong industry links developed by TUS, which has produced highly employable biotechnology graduates at NFQ Levels 7 and 8 since 1996. The programme was developed in response to significant employment opportunities within Ireland’s expanding biopharmaceutical sector. Alongside lectures and laboratory sessions at TUS and site visits to local biopharmaceutical plants, the programme includes practical training at the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT) in Dublin. NIBRT is a fully functional replica bioprocessing plant, equipped with modern manufacturing facilities such as upstream and downstream processing, fill-finish, and bioanalytical units. Training at NIBRT provides valuable hands-on experience of the full range of processes involved in biopharmaceutical production, enhancing practical understanding of industrial operations. The MSc in Biopharmaceutical Technology is delivered at the Athlone campus of TUS from September to August and combines theoretical instruction with extensive practical training. Delivery includes on-campus classes, a dedicated training period at NIBRT, site visits to biopharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, and guest lectures from professionals working at the forefront of the biopharmaceutical industry. Ireland is home to nine of the world’s top ten global pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and seven of the ten worldwide blockbuster drug products are manufactured in the country. The Irish Government’s Expert Group on Future Skills Needs has identified the biopharmaceutical sector as one that will continue to require highly skilled scientists in the coming years. The modules within this programme have been specifically designed to address current and future skills shortages in both the Irish and international biopharmaceutical industries. Graduates are well prepared for careers across biopharmaceuticals, medical devices, biotechnology, and medical diagnostics, as well as for progression into research and development roles in academia and industry.
