Overview

The Art and Design (Common Entry) programme at Limerick School of Art & Design (LSAD) is designed to develop confident, articulate, informed, creative, and expressive practitioners capable of making significant contributions to contemporary culture. Year One provides students with the stimuli to foster self-confidence, self-motivation, and an appetite for knowledge, which underpin the development of creative practice. The programme acknowledges the diverse ethnic, cultural, and gender backgrounds of its students as the foundation for individual originality and equips them with the skills, vocabulary, and contextual knowledge required to progress to second-year honours studies in disciplines such as Painting, Print & Contemporary Practice, Sculpture & Combined Media, Animation & Motion Design, Ceramics in Expanding Practice, Fashion, or Graphic Design Communication. LSAD, as the largest centre for Art and Design outside of Dublin, offers nationally and internationally recognised programmes with a strong emphasis on active, hands-on studio learning that integrates theory and practice. In Semester One, students engage in broad-based studio projects that develop core skills in 2D and 3D studies, digital media, concept development, and contextual research, while familiarising themselves with the vocabulary and methodologies of contemporary Art and Design. Semester Two allows students to explore three elective specialisations through intensive practical introductions, followed by feedback and tutorials to guide the selection of a discipline for final three years of study. Provisional places in specialised disciplines are offered based on grade point averages and confirmed upon successful completion of Year One.
