Overview

The MSc in Data Analytics focuses on the process of examining large volumes of data, often referred to as Big Data, to extract meaningful insights and inform decision-making. Applications of Data Analytics include real-time fraud detection, complex commercial analysis, website optimisation, intelligent traffic management, and analysis of consumer spending patterns. Big Data presents challenges due to the volume, speed, and diversity of data sources, but with appropriate techniques and tools, it is possible to uncover patterns, relationships, and insights from multiple sources. This programme equips students with the knowledge to understand data contexts, apply suitable analytical techniques, and utilise relevant tools to generate actionable insights. Data Analytics has been identified as an area of skills deficit by the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs, and demand for graduates in this field continues to rise across industries such as finance, marketing, healthcare, and biopharma. According to IBM, demand for Data Analytics professionals is expected to grow by 28% by 2020 (Forbes, 2017), with average salaries reported at $69,949 in the US (PwC, 2017) and €44,758 in Ireland (indeed.ie, 2017). Graduates of this programme are prepared for roles including Data Analyst, Data Scientist, Performance and Analytics Analyst, Data Operations Analyst, Financial Market Analyst, Business Intelligence Analyst, and Customer Insight Analyst.
