Overview

This two-year program is designed to equip students with the technical and professional skills needed to work in a wide range of healthcare settings. It provides a strong foundation in medical terminology and administrative procedures while developing proficiency in specialized medical software. Students learn to manage patient information, handle scheduling and billing, and communicate effectively within healthcare environments. Key areas of learning include medical office procedures, medical terminology, anatomy and medicine, electronic billing and scheduling, medical transcription techniques, and the use of specialized medical software applications. After successfully completing the first three semesters and meeting the required GPA, students may choose between a Medical Simulation course or a Field Placement option, which typically involves two days per week in a healthcare setting. Both pathways prepare students for entry-level administrative support roles and offer valuable opportunities to gain practical experience and explore potential career paths. The program is accredited by the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA), indicating that it meets industry standards established through consultation and ongoing evaluation by the Canadian College of Health Information Management. This accreditation reflects a commitment to maintaining high-quality educational content that aligns with the evolving needs of the health information field. Graduates of the Office Administration – Health Services program are eligible to write the CHIMA national certification examination, with further details regarding requirements and fees available on the CHIMA website. Students develop skills in providing specialized administrative support to medical professionals, producing accurate medical documentation using industry-specific software, managing OHIP billing and electronic scheduling, conducting online research, and coordinating tasks efficiently. The program also emphasizes strong interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills, supported through simulated patient interactions. Sheridan’s mobile computing environment allows students continuous access to course materials and software applications. With the use of personal laptops, students can complete coursework, collaborate with peers, and communicate with instructors at any time, supporting a flexible and enhanced learning experience.
