Overview

Healthcare is one of the fastest-growing career areas in Connecticut. There’s an enormous range of professions in hospitals and healthcare centers – these include many different jobs in direct patient care, clinical research, administration and management, patient support, and healthcare data analytics, among many other areas. The Bachelor of Health Science (BHSc) degree program offers a bachelor's degree for students wishing to gain a comprehensive foundation in natural sciences necessary for admission to graduate programs for health professions. They gain knowledge about how the healthcare system works. This knowledge is extremely valuable and appealing to employers in the healthcare field. The concentration in Health Science Foundations is the pre-acceptance program for students interested in applying to Southern's upper division BHSc in Health Science. Student learning outcomes are: Demonstrate a strong foundation in behavioral, natural, social, and health sciences appropriate for entry-level positions in the healthcare sector and/or admission to post graduate programs. Critically examine and produce sound written analyses of healthcare policy, health interventions, trends and outcomes. Demonstrate general knowledge of medical perspectives including ethics, healthcare systems, and health professions. Demonstrate knowledge of best practices of managing and storing patient/client health information. Adopt competencies of Interprofessional Education (IPE) and interprofessional teaming that promote aptitude with working in multi-professional settings.
