Overview

Humans are an intriguing species known for creativity, conflict, cultural transmission, and ritual creation. Despite individual differences, there is a profound biological connection, with 98.7% of human DNA matching that of bonobos. Anthropology delves into these complexities, exploring the significance of actions and traditions while fostering a deeper understanding of what it means to be human. Anthropology is a social science — bridging the humanities with social, earth, biological and chemical sciences. It is a research-based discipline, but it is also a way of understanding the human condition itself. Students benefit from the in-field experience of professors and can engage in ongoing research or explore topics of personal interest. In Anthropology, the world serves as a classroom, offering a lens that provides focus and clarity to human diversity. The major subdivisions are socio-cultural anthropology, linguistics, archaeology, and (biological) physical anthropology. Students are expected to gain a broad background in all subfields, after which the options of further general study or specialization are available. Students are encouraged to supplement their anthropological studies with work in other social sciences, and where appropriate, in biology, earth sciences, humanities, mathematics, or other areas. Most professional anthropologists find employment as teachers and researchers in colleges and universities. However, a major in anthropology provides the student with a unique liberal arts background bridging the humanities, social, earth, biological, and chemical sciences, which leads to many other professional opportunities outside of teaching and research

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
