Overview

English is the study of literature and an intellectual discipline that teaches how to think creatively and critically. Whether analyzing or creating literary texts, valuable lessons about the human experience are learned. Individuals learn to look beneath the surface for hidden, unconscious meaning, understand that language can be both powerful and playful, and—perhaps most importantly—comprehend differences while finding shared value and meaning in a complex social world. English majors become interpreters and creators, teachers and communicators, no matter the career path chosen. This opens opportunities in fields such as education and law. However, English majors are valuable to any employer seeking individuals who can communicate directly and clearly, take on responsibility, initiate change, and solve problems creatively and independently. Available specializations for B.A. English include: Creative Writing: Take time to improve fiction, poetry, or other forms of creative writing. Challenge abilities with new writing styles. Gain insight from peers in workshops and learn from faculty and graduate students in this well-known and respected program. Literature: A traditional major paired with a forward-looking curriculum. Students learn to read critically and write analytically while gaining perspective by focusing on specific areas of literature. Understanding how to approach writing of different styles to uncover the meaning of text and subtext is emphasized. A literature specialization serves as excellent preparation for graduate school or a professional career. Preprofessional: Technical writing and business prose are crucial components of written communication. Skills in breaking down complex concepts and explaining them in coherent and complete written sentences are essential. Choosing this specialization enhances career options in business, the sciences, communications, journalism, and more.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
