Overview

The fashion industry is known for rapid change and characterized by new technology, globalization, and changing consumer desires. This industry employs millions of people and reflects the health of a nation’s economy due to the significant spending by consumers on fashion goods. The fashion industry comprises businesses that design, produce, and sell a unique array of consumer goods known for seasonal changes in fabrics, colors, and silhouettes. Fashion products are not exclusive to women’s apparel; rather, production and sales are organized into various product categories, including men’s, women’s, and children’s apparel and accessories, cosmetics and fragrances, and home furnishings. A fashion career suits individuals who thrive on change. The four-year curriculum in fashion studies provides the foundational education for those intending to pursue a career in fashion. There are three specializations in the Fashion Studies major: Fashion Design, Fashion Merchandising, and Fashion Styling (enrollment temporarily suspended). Each specialization includes a structured sequencing of courses that ensures a gradual interactive development of required knowledge and skills. This preparation is combined with University Core Curriculum courses to provide a comprehensive scholarly foundation for advancement. A fast-paced atmosphere arises from the volume of information to be covered, the frequency of assignments, and the pressure of due dates. Successful students must handle multiple projects simultaneously and manage time wisely. While facilities are available for use, costs for supplies, individual equipment, and field trips necessary for successful program completion are the responsibility of the student. Due to variations in individual materials, exact costs for each student are difficult to predict. The Fashion Studies program retains the right to keep student work for exhibition or for records and accreditation purposes. Students are advised to assemble a photographic file of their work for portfolios. All students in the fashion studies major must have a laptop computer by the beginning of the second semester of their freshman year.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
