Overview

Southern Illinois University offers one of the nation’s most selective bachelor’s degree programs that is career-focused. Outstanding faculty lead classes in anatomy, pathology, and microbiology while also providing concepts of art and cosmetology. Graduates of the program learn how to manage and operate funeral homes as funeral directors, overseeing all aspects of the business. The program offers a Bachelor of Science degree, making graduates eligible to be licensed in all 50 states. A wide range of courses are studied, both in class and in lab, to equip students with the skills and resources needed to become valuable assets in the funeral service profession. With a 92 percent graduation rate, students move into the field quickly, with 83 percent employed within two years of graduation. At SIU, students are encouraged to participate in an internship, enabling aspiring professionals to gain firsthand experience working in the funeral service industry while building upon concepts learned in class. As an intern, individuals work side-by-side with a mentor to learn about how to complete mortuary tasks, and then practice under close supervision to develop skills.
