Overview

In the current globalized world and economy, awareness of other cultures and the ability to communicate in another language are increasingly in demand. Spanish, in particular, as the fifth most spoken language in the world and the second most spoken language in the United States after English, can open doors to job opportunities in various fields. The program in Spanish at SIU aims to develop high-level proficiency in the Spanish language alongside a broad knowledge of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. Courses focus on building competence in the four fundamental skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing while expanding knowledge in language and culture through linguistics, history, literature, film, translation, and professional contexts. In line with the goals of a traditional liberal arts education, this program promotes cultural awareness and critical thinking, and strongly encourages students to spend time abroad. Additionally, a variety of venues outside the classroom, such as organized activities like Spanish Table and Spanish Club, provide opportunities to meet native speakers and practice communication in the language.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
