Overview

Program Description Immersion in the field is a hallmark of this program. Students won’t spend just one semester student teaching – they’ll spend countless hours working with youngsters in a variety of settings. In fact, during their first year on campus, they'll be placed in local classrooms to work with students. Here, students will quickly feel like part of a family. From the time they arrive on campus until they graduate, they’ll be guided by a faculty mentor. They’ll enjoy small class sizes and amazing friendships with their fellow education majors. The dedicated professors will get to know them. They will support students in their coursework, field experiences and career preparations. They will become personally invested in students' success as a future teacher. As education students, they can choose to major in either early childhood (age 3-grade 3) or middle childhood (grades 4-9). With additional coursework, middle childhood majors can add grades 4-6 non-concentration areas to their Ohio teaching license. With both majors, students will take liberal arts courses in English, mathematics, history, art, music and science, as well as courses in child development, exceptional learners, technology, curriculum, classroom strategies, methods of teaching and more. ONU's small setting equals big opportunity. From attending a national education conference to studying abroad, from assisting a professor with a research project to running a student organization, students will discover countless opportunities to expand their horizons. It takes a special person to teach. ONU is committed to helping students build the knowledge, skills and disposition necessary for a fulfilling and lifelong career in education!

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
