Overview

Program Description At ONU, students will tackle advanced math problems and theories while honing skills like communication, leadership and teamwork that will set them apart in graduate school or the workplace. Students in the applied mathematics concentration are trained to creatively use their strong mathematical background, through modeling, simulations and optimization, to solve a multitude of problems arising in industry and applied sciences. If their primary major is in engineering, physics or chemistry, they will substantially benefit from having applied mathematics as a second major: increased income upon graduation, enhanced chances of success through graduate school, or attractive research and development careers. Students may also sign up for a stand-alone applied mathematics concentration based on a specific area of application of their choice. The advanced mathematics studies concentration is geared toward students interested in careers such as teaching and fundamental research at the university level, or those desiring careers in research, development and consulting in cutting edge areas requiring advanced math skills, such as artificial intelligence, cryptography, finance or national security analysis. The teacher licensure concentration is for students who want to become licensed to teach math to seventh- through 12th-graders in the state of Ohio. With this concentration, they'll take a combination of math and education courses and spend time observing and teaching in local classrooms.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
