Overview

The Health Care Aide programme at NorQuest College prepares students for rewarding careers supporting individuals who require care, dignity and compassion. Students develop the skills needed to provide frontline support in hospitals, continuing care facilities and home care settings, and graduate prepared to take the Alberta Health Care Aide Registration Exam. NorQuest College is licensed to deliver the Health Care Aide Government of Alberta Provincial Curriculum. Graduates of the programme develop the knowledge and practical abilities required to perform effectively within the roles and responsibilities of a Health Care Aide in Alberta and the wider Canadian healthcare system. The curriculum supports the development of professionalism, accountability and responsibility within collaborative care teams. Students learn to provide ethical, person-centred and culturally competent care that promotes clients’ health, wellbeing, safety, independence and comfort across the lifespan and within a range of healthcare settings. Students apply foundational theory, key principles and evidence-based practices to provide holistic care for clients with varied health needs and conditions. They also develop effective communication skills, learn to contribute to shared care goals and practise competently according to evidence-based guidelines. The programme emphasises the importance of maintaining the safety of clients, colleagues and care environments. Students learn to follow relevant legislation, organisational policies and procedures, while developing the ability to recognise, respond to, report and record situations appropriately. Ongoing self-reflection is also encouraged to support the continuous development of Health Care Aide competencies. Through a combination of academic learning and practical experience, students build the confidence and capability required for quality care delivery. NorQuest College places strong emphasis on workplace experience as an important part of the learning process. Students graduate with 320 hours of work experience gained through three practicums. The clinical component includes a full-time practicum in a healthcare facility. Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from placement locations, which may be up to 100 kilometres away.
