Overview

The Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence (Align) at Northeastern University is designed for individuals from non-computer science backgrounds who want to transition into the field of AI. The program begins with a two-semester foundational phase that equips students with essential knowledge in programming, algorithms, and core computing concepts. After completing this bridge component, students progress into advanced coursework covering areas such as machine learning, computer vision, intelligent interaction, robotics and agent systems, and knowledge representation and reasoning. The curriculum emphasizes a human-centered and responsible approach to AI development. Students in the program have the flexibility to study either full time or part time and may choose to participate in an optional paid co-op or internship lasting four to eight months, allowing them to gain practical industry experience. The program can typically be completed in as little as 2.5 years, preparing graduates to pursue careers in AI across a wide range of industries. Offered by the Khoury College of Computer Sciences, the program includes a concentration in machine learning, where students learn to design and deploy AI solutions for real-world applications such as healthcare and finance. Coursework in advanced machine learning and natural language processing focuses on handling complex datasets and building ethical, reliable AI systems.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
