Overview

Forensic Psychologists operate as scientist-practitioners across a range of domains, including criminal investigation, policing, the court system, probation, the criminal and civil justice systems, secure clinical settings, offender management, and private practice. Students will develop a critical academic understanding of the various factors that may contribute to different forms of offending. The course encourages reflection on the role and limitations of causal explanations for offending in the development of offender treatments and services. It prepares graduates to work in environments where forensic psychology is applied, equipping them with essential skills such as interdisciplinary collaboration, risk assessment for violence, understanding vulnerability and ethics, professional development, and report writing. Graduates will leave with a strong understanding of the legal system, the role of forensic psychologists, and how psychological theory and research can inform legal processes. The course covers current and relevant topics within Forensic Psychology, including Vulnerability and Neurodiversity in the Criminal Justice System, Sexual and Violent Crime, Investigative Psychology, and Ethical Practice. It also offers opportunities for practical application through a Forensic Volunteering placement and the Forensic Data Analysis module, which utilizes real-world data to prepare students for work as trainee Forensic Psychologists and for applying their learning to real-life cases and scenarios. Key reasons to study this course include: Exploration of cutting-edge topics through the Investigative Forensic Psychology module, which examines investigative processes and the influence of psychological theory and empirical research on forensic practices and outcomes Practical work experience gained through the Forensic Volunteering module, providing valuable hands-on exposure prior to graduation A strong emphasis on real-world data analysis and topical modules such as Vulnerability and Neurodiversity, Ethical Practice, and Sexual and Violent Crime, which equip students for real-world professional scenarios Instruction and guidance from an experienced course team, including practicing Forensic Psychologists and professionals with backgrounds in the UK Police, the International Criminal Court, the US High Value Detainee Interrogation Group, and the FBI Inclusive and authentic teaching methods designed to support career progression in forensic psychology, with a focus on addressing biases in research and practice and engaging with issues of sexuality, gender, diversity, and culture
