Overview

This program focuses on building practical skills in embedded systems, a field that underpins modern technologies such as smart devices, robotics, and autonomous systems. It emphasizes the integration of hardware and software, real-time operating systems, and embedded programming. Through a combination of hands-on labs, applied projects, and a final capstone, learners develop the ability to design and implement real-world embedded solutions. Instruction is supported by faculty with industry experience, helping bridge theoretical knowledge with practical application. Participants gain exposure to key tools and technologies used in the industry, including microcontroller development platforms like Arduino, ARM Cortex, and Raspberry Pi, along with essential electronics components and development environments such as Keil, Eclipse, and GCC toolchains. The program also encourages engagement with industry through guest lectures, case studies, and collaborative initiatives, providing valuable insights into current trends and practices. Graduates of the program are prepared for a variety of roles, including embedded systems developer, IoT engineer, firmware developer, robotics programmer, and systems designer. Opportunities exist across industries such as automotive, telecommunications, healthcare, manufacturing, and consumer electronics. The program also supports further academic progression, allowing graduates to pursue advanced studies in areas like artificial intelligence, robotics, IoT, or related engineering and computer science disciplines.

About the Institution

George Brown Polytechnic opened its doors in 1968, welcoming just over 2,000 students. In addition to programs in construction, early childhood education, dental services and the culinary arts – subjects they continue to teach – George Brown once offered programs that might not be quite as relevant today, like sign writing or watchmaking. Believe it or not, they even prepared students for careers at sea through a marine engineering program. Since then, the student population has grown to over 30,000. People come to George Brown from across the Greater Toronto Area, the country and the world to...
