Overview

Program Description The Theatre Arts – Performance program at George Brown's School of Media and Performing Arts offers you vigorously concentrated, career-oriented training in the fundamental skills, practicalities, traditions and professionalism needed to work as a professional actor in theatre, television and film. The conservatory, hands-on training is an integrated curriculum in which almost all subjects are related directly to the acting profession. Five skill courses form the core of our classical approach to training the actor: voice, speech, movement, music and dance. The acting curriculum features improvisation, contact improvisation, storytelling, poetry, text analysis, contemporary and classical scene studies, neutral mask, character mask, clowning, commedia dell’arte, television and film technique, and audition preparation. Further classes include: stage combat, dialectology, theatre history, the business of acting, and the Alexander Technique. We also enjoy partnerships with Soulpepper Theatre Company and the Tarragon Theatre. Note: Some applicants from certain countries who have IELTS overall 5.5, with writing & speaking 6 / Duolingo 95 / TOEFL 62 with Speaking & writing 20 may be able to receive a conditional offer with EAP Level 8 on a case by case basis.

About the Institution

George Brown Polytechnic opened its doors in 1968, welcoming just over 2,000 students. In addition to programs in construction, early childhood education, dental services and the culinary arts – subjects they continue to teach – George Brown once offered programs that might not be quite as relevant today, like sign writing or watchmaking. Believe it or not, they even prepared students for careers at sea through a marine engineering program. Since then, the student population has grown to over 30,000. People come to George Brown from across the Greater Toronto Area, the country and the world to...
