Overview

Electrical and electronic engineering explores how satellites connect the world, how robots process information, and how future technologies like smart cities and autonomous vehicles will communicate. It is a field driven by innovation, focused on designing sustainable electrical systems that transform everyday life and address global challenges. This discipline underpins many of the technologies that shape modern living, from smartphones and medical devices to advanced communication networks and intelligent systems. It centres on the use of electricity to control, process, and transmit information efficiently and effectively. The MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering course at GCU equips students with the knowledge and skills to design intelligent, connected, and sustainable systems. Core areas of study include embedded systems, communications, robotics, control engineering, and power systems, alongside strong foundations in mathematics, programming, and electronics. These elements combine to develop the ability to solve complex engineering problems with confidence. The course emphasises practical, hands-on learning through laboratory work, team-based projects, and real-world challenges. Students also explore emerging fields such as data analysis and intelligent systems, including technologies that enable devices and infrastructure to communicate and share data. Applications include smart home devices, wearable technology, connected vehicles, and city-wide smart systems. Strong links with industry ensure that course content remains relevant and aligned with employer needs. Students benefit from guest lectures, industry-led projects, and networking opportunities, as well as the option to undertake a year-long industrial placement or study abroad experience to broaden their perspectives. Graduates leave the programme with the technical expertise, professional awareness, and confidence required to succeed in a rapidly evolving global industry. The MEng programme follows the same structure as the four-year BEng (Hons) course but includes an additional fifth year of advanced study and a major project, subject to meeting progression criteria. Studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering at GCU provides a pathway toward Chartered Engineer status, with accreditation from the Institution of Engineering Technology (IET) and the Institute of Measurement and Control (InstMC). The programme prepares students for careers in high-growth sectors such as energy, communications, robotics, and artificial intelligence, supported by strong industry connections, placement opportunities, and engagement with leading organisations.
