Overview

The MSc Advanced Practice is designed to help registered health and social care professionals progress in their careers by strengthening clinical expertise, leadership capability, and research skills. As health and social care systems increasingly integrate to better support individuals, families, and communities, there is a growing demand for practitioners with advanced, master’s-level qualifications. This programme enables practitioners to build on their existing knowledge and apply it critically across key areas such as clinical assessment, analytical thinking, and research. A strong emphasis is placed on person-centred care, with service users and carers positioned at the heart of clinical practice. Students examine how their perspectives can inform policy, enhance service delivery, and improve professional communication and leadership. The course is available as a full-time programme, with a part-time option for UK-based professionals. Students can complete the MSc Advanced Practice as a general degree or choose from a range of specialist pathways, including Diabetes Care. The MSc Advanced Practice (Diabetes Care) pathway is suitable for a wide range of healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, paramedics, pharmacists, podiatrists, occupational therapists, and dietitians. It provides an opportunity to develop specialist expertise in a field of increasing global importance through a multidisciplinary approach. Students explore current research and developments in diabetes care, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the biology of diabetes, prevention strategies, diagnosis, clinical management, and both acute and long-term complications. The programme also supports the development of skills needed to engage in clinical research and evidence-based practice. Practical learning is integrated throughout the course, with opportunities to visit hospital clinics and learn directly from clinical specialists. These experiences enhance understanding of patient pathways and support the application of theory to real-world healthcare settings. The dissertation module allows students to focus on a specific area of diabetes or undertake a clinical audit in collaboration with local specialists.
