Overview

The MSc Medical Imaging is designed for qualified radiographers seeking to progress into enhanced or advanced practice roles within modern healthcare. With a strong emphasis on industry-informed teaching and research-led learning, the programme prepares students to integrate advanced imaging technologies, influence policy, and contribute to service development across Scotland, the UK, and global healthcare systems. Students can specialise through a range of pathways, including the Artificial Intelligence (AI) pathway, which focuses on developing the knowledge and skills required to evaluate, implement, and govern AI technologies within imaging services. This pathway provides insight into how AI is applied across health and social care, with a particular focus on its role in imaging practice. Teaching brings together key areas such as the evaluation of imaging-specific AI tools, governance and safety considerations, and the application of digital health research to support clinical decision-making and service improvement. Students explore practical aspects of AI integration, including data quality, workflow adaptation, and the real-world challenges of implementing AI in clinical environments. Throughout the programme, learners are supported through the use of digital platforms and tools, enabling them to critically assess their clinical context and develop the confidence to apply AI solutions effectively. The pathway also fosters strong analytical and evidence-based skills, supporting graduates in driving innovation, improving services, and contributing to research and governance in imaging. The programme offers flexible study options, including a full-time route for UK and international applicants with at least two years of post-qualification experience, as well as a part-time option for UK-based professionals balancing work and study. In addition, the module “Artificial Intelligence for Health and Social Care Practitioners” is available as a standalone continuing professional development (CPD) opportunity. Graduates of the AI pathway are well positioned to take on leadership roles in the evolving field of medical imaging, equipped with the expertise to safely and effectively implement AI technologies. The course reflects current national digital health priorities and supports collaboration across health and social care disciplines, ensuring a forward-thinking and practice-relevant learning experience.
