Overview

The MSc Medical Imaging is designed for qualified radiographers seeking to progress into enhanced or advanced roles within modern healthcare. With an industry-informed curriculum and a strong emphasis on research-led learning, the programme prepares students to integrate advanced imaging technologies, contribute to policy development, and deliver high-quality care across healthcare systems in Scotland, the UK, and internationally. Within this programme, the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) pathway offers an opportunity to develop specialist knowledge and skills in MRI and advance clinical practice. It provides a deeper understanding of MRI physics and image formation, focusing on how these principles support safe, accurate, and effective scanning. Teaching combines theoretical knowledge with practical application, enabling students to apply advanced imaging techniques and make informed decisions in complex clinical situations. Simulation-based learning plays a key role, allowing students to develop and refine their skills in a controlled environment. Where available, short supervised placements offer additional opportunities to gain practical experience and insight into clinical practice. Throughout the pathway, students are encouraged to connect academic learning with day-to-day clinical experience, building confidence and enhancing professional capability. The programme supports both those advancing within their current roles and those seeking new career directions in imaging. Flexible study options are available, including a full-time route for UK and international applicants with at least two years of post-qualification experience, and a part-time option for UK-based professionals balancing work and study over three to five years. Graduates are equipped with the advanced technical expertise, critical thinking skills, and professional awareness required to take on leadership roles in MRI practice. The course is supported by strong NHS and industry partnerships, access to state-of-the-art simulation facilities, and opportunities for service evaluation, research, and innovation, ensuring a practice-focused and forward-looking learning experience.
