Overview

The Philosophy MPhil programme offers students the opportunity to undertake innovative research under the supervision of experts working across a wide range of philosophical traditions and approaches. The department covers most major areas of philosophy, including analytic, continental, and empirically informed perspectives, with particular strengths in ethics, epistemology, philosophy of mind, and their intersections. Research activity also extends to areas such as aesthetics, existentialism, feminist philosophy, moral philosophy, philosophy of language, and the relationship between philosophy and psychology, creating a rich and diverse intellectual environment. The programme is designed to prepare students for careers in higher education and other fields requiring advanced research and analytical skills. Students are supported in developing their research into a rigorous and original contribution to philosophical knowledge, culminating in a high-quality doctoral thesis. The academic community is close-knit and active, with MPhil students playing a central role in seminars, discussions, and collaborative activities. Distinctive features of the programme include its integration of different philosophical traditions and methodologies, as well as a strong emphasis on academic engagement and professional development. Students participate in regular research seminars, workshops, reading groups, and an annual conference, and are encouraged to publish their work. Opportunities for teaching on undergraduate programmes are available, supported by formal training initiatives. Additional support includes funding for conference attendance and access to dedicated research facilities, providing a well-rounded and supportive environment for doctoral study.
