Overview

The Language, Policy and Planning PhD programme offers students the opportunity to undertake advanced research within a dynamic and interdisciplinary environment, supported by experts in areas such as language policy, language rights and politics, sociolinguistics, bilingualism and multilingualism, and language variation and change. The programme is led by the Language, Policy and Planning Research Unit within the School of Welsh, which is recognised for its contributions to national and international developments in language planning. Research within the programme examines the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of language across different contexts and scales, from local communities to global settings. A wide range of quantitative and qualitative methodologies is employed, enabling students to explore complex issues related to language use, policy, and identity. The programme is designed to prepare graduates for careers in areas such as government, media, education, management, and academic research. Students benefit from a supportive research culture that includes regular seminars and conferences, opportunities for teaching, and engagement with collaborative projects involving international partners. The programme also maintains strong links with public institutions and policymakers, providing valuable opportunities to connect research with real-world applications and policy development.
