The programme is supported by a strong international reputation for research excellence and is designed to develop both subject-specific expertise and transferable skills, preparing graduates for careers in academia as well as a wide range of professional sectors. Students are able to pursue research across a broad spectrum of topics, including history and memory, culture and identity, translation studies, global area studies, conflict and development, literary and textual studies, cultural studies, and visual cultures. This diversity of research areas encourages interdisciplinary approaches and enables students to explore complex global and cultural issues from multiple perspectives. The programme provides a range of opportunities for academic and professional development, including the chance to gain teaching experience where available. Students can participate in research seminar series designed to support the presentation and refinement of their work in a constructive environment. Additional support includes access to research funding for academic activities and involvement in wider research networks, such as collaborations within ESRC-funded doctoral training partnerships, enhancing both research quality and career prospects.
