Overview

Psychological Medicine and Clinical Neurosciences is a specialised research area within the postgraduate research programmes (Phd), focusing on understanding the biological, psychological, and neurological mechanisms underlying mental health and neurological disorders. The programme is delivered within a large and well-established division, bringing together a substantial community of academic staff and postgraduate researchers working across a wide range of disciplines. Research in this area addresses numerous conditions, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety, ADHD, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s disease, as well as multiple sclerosis and epilepsy. The work is highly interdisciplinary, incorporating approaches from genetics, molecular and cellular biology, behavioural neuroscience, neuroimaging, epidemiology, bioinformatics, and data science to provide a comprehensive understanding of these conditions. The programme is supported by several leading research centres, including those focused on neuropsychiatric genetics, mental health, brain repair, and dementia research. These centres provide access to advanced facilities, collaborative networks, and innovative research initiatives. Students benefit from a strong research environment that combines clinical relevance with scientific discovery, offering opportunities to contribute to impactful research in mental health and neuroscience.
