Overview

The programme focuses on Freshwater and Marine Biology of organisms, populations, communities and ecosystems. The sustainable development of renewable resources in the face of the rapidly expanding population and developing economy is a consistent theme throughout the programme. This is an applied biology programme with an emphasis on practicals, projects and placement. Students on this programme complete numerous field trips from seashores to lakes, rivers and wetlands within Ireland and abroad (often Spain or Portugal). Students study various modules from marine biology research to environmental management, biodiversity and conservation studies of rivers and lakes, ecology and zoology. Ireland’s wetland habitats are home to numerous plant and animal species. They form an important network of habitats for many species on migration and will be central to restoring biodiversity and mitigation of our carbon emissions. Ireland’s marine environment is roughly ten times the size of its landmass with a wide range of habitats and species. The ocean has a fundamental role in our climate, food, and future energy supply. Year 1 covers a range of science modules common to a number of science degrees. Year 2 focuses on Biology, the science of life. Biologists explore and learn how organisms are constructed and how they function. This involves the study of reproduction, growth and development and also how organisms capture and use raw materials and energy. Year 3 covers areas such as fisheries, pollution control, the environment and aquatic biology where the main activity entails the monitoring of the aquatic environment.
