Overview

The University Foundation Pathway is Stage 1 of the undergraduate pathway. The transition from high school to university is a big step, perhaps the most important. Staff at ARU College understand this, and will provide students with ongoing guidance, support, and the knowledge and skills they need. It is this partnership between the students and the staff that will make this transition a smooth one. This is a 2 trimester course, which means that an undergraduate degree will take 4 years to complete. During Stage 1 students will complete a range of modules relevant to their chosen degree, as well as modules concentrating on the skills that are vital for University level education such as Critical Thinking. Stage 1 will be the first stage in the 4 stage process. Meaning that on successful completion of stage 1 students will seamlessly progress to stage 2, which is the first year of a bachelor’s degree. On this Foundation Pathway in Medical and Life Science, students will be: Given an introduction to the various scientific disciplines underpinning the life sciences. Taught the fundamental mathematical skills which will provide support in other subjects as well as build confidence in manipulating data. Introduced to molecular and cellular biology, and how these fields are applied to real-world investigations. Taught the biology of micro and macro organisms, with reference to both human and animal structures. Introduced to the core concepts of chemistry, with a particular focus on organic chemistry. Given a grounding in the core principles of physics, applied to living organisms. On completing this pathway program, students can discover how biomedical scientists diagnose and treat diseases, by studying for a degree in Biomedical Science in ARU's specialist laboratories in Cambridge.
