Overview

In the Bachelor of Science program in Biology with a concentration in Environmental Justice, students examine living systems through experiential learning and scientific inquiry. By learning in an integrative environment that emphasizes the interconnectedness of the life sciences and social sciences through the lens of justice and equity, students gain an understanding of larger scientific concepts and how science can be applied to social policies to effect positive outcomes for communities and ecosystems. All of the program's core courses include laboratories to provide students with ample practice in scientific inquiry, encompassing the development of scientific questions, designing experiments, collecting data, and performing data analysis. Students are encouraged to conduct independent research under the mentorship of faculty members or during internships. Some students even publish in top journals and present their results at scientific meetings. Those in this concentration apply their research to social policies aimed at improving outcomes for marginalized communities and natural ecosystems.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
